First created back in 2004, Ripple was finally launched in 2012. It aimed to compete with transaction systems such as SWIFT, but quickly became a payment method - as unlike the four-hour wait of other currencies to settle a transaction, Ripple takes just 3.6 seconds.

Often described as a “hard fork of Bitcoin”, Bitcoin Cash was created in August 2017 to increase the number of transactions that can be processed overall. “Block size” increased from 1MB to 8MB and the limiting “Segregated Witness” code was removed - so more can be done at once.

Created by ex-Google engineer, Charlie Lee, Litecoin is refreshingly honest about being the ‘silver to Bitcoin’s gold’ as a faster, more lightweight version - taking just a quarter of the time to process transactions. Its most unique feature is a ‘mining’ algorithm designed to stop over-mining of the currency.

Cardano (and its token ADA) was launched in September 2017 by Charles Hoskinson - also the co-founder of Ethereum. Regularly analysed by science and programming scholars, Cardano aims to eventually become a control method to run financial applications on a global scale.

Started in 2014, NEO (formerly Antshares) is dubbed by some as “Chinese Ethereum” - the first open-sourced cryptocurrency to come out of China. NEO’s ultimate goal is to convert traditional assets into digital ones and legally protect them using “smart contracts”.

Founded by Jed McCaleb in 2014 as an offshoot of Ripple, Stellar prides itself on enabling payments between people, rather than providing solutions to banks. Their network can handle almost 1,000 transactions per second, but can only be purchased via a cryptocurrency exchange, not a credit card.

Unlike other cryptocurrencies, EOS had a year-long initial coin offering and token distribution period. Combining the best features of other smart contract technology, there is a unique proof-of-stake concept, where users wager coins on how much a “block” will be worth when added to the system.

Under development since 2015, IOTA uses Tangle - a complex graph that requiring you to approve two other transactions before yours can be processed. What’s more, the transaction speed increases as the number of users increases, so there are currently no transaction fees.
